The Plants ~
Marshmallow root — May relieve skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. It is also effective in treating insect bites, wounds, dry or chapped skin, and burns. Its potent anti-inflammatory properties, coupled with its healing, soothing, skin-softening mucilage, heal and protect the skin. This gentle herb is extremely agreeable to those with hypersensitive skin prone to allergic reactions.
Elderflower — Also called the “Elder Mother,” elderflower contains “buttery” volatile oils (due to its presence of fatty acids), coumarins, bitters, flavonoids, sterols, mucilage, and tannins. It soothes and protects the sebum, supports lymphatic drainage, gently helps stimulate circulation, is potent in vitamin C, and supports collagen production. Elderflower has a rich history dating back thousands of years. It’s highly respected and should be treated with reverence.
Chamomile — Chamomile flowers have been shown to reduce redness, irritation, and acne while promoting skin brightening and fighting against free radicals.
Rose - Rose is Aphrodites’ botanical form. She is her essence. She represents beauty, sensuality, sexuality, the divine feminine, bravery, action, and wholeness. Roses are calming and hydrating sensitive skin types; they are also known to have mild cleansing attributes due to their natural antibacterial properties.
Rosemary — “There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance” — Shakespeare. This plant is warming and stimulating. An excellent energetic that contributes to its ability to smooth fine lines, tighten up skin tone, and skin elasticity. I use rosemary often topically for weakness, tiredness, or overworked muscles.
Fenugreek — Fenugreek has been clinically shown to have anti-collagenase activity and increased collagen production, which can refer to the anti-aging property. It’s also exceptional at gently exfoliating the skin and managing excess oil production.
Sesame Oil — Highly reverenced in Ayureveda as the queen of oils. This oil’s nourishing, calming, and warming properties make it an ideal option for Abhyanga (self-massage). Sesame oil is a rich source of an antioxidant called sesamol that prevents cell damage caused by the free radicals. It also helps in reversing the skin damage caused by UV rays, pollution, and environmental toxins.
Jojoba Oil — Jojoba oil is actually a liquid wax. A Kapha-Pitta dosha skin type can be prone to acne. Ayurveda indicates that an aggravated Kapha leads to increased sebum production and clogged pores, resulting in both white and blackheads. Another factor for an aggravated Pitta is characterized by the presence of red papules (bumps) and inflammation with pus. Jojoba may help control acne by balancing Pitta due to its Sita (cold) nature. Since the oil is light, it prevents blockages in the skin pores while balancing Kapha.
